CAN chairman suspends bishops for meddling in politics

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South-South zone, Archbishop God-Dowell Avwomakpa, who doubles as the head of bishops in the Niger/Delta region, has suspended some bishops in the Niger-Delta region, who initiated dialogue between the Presidency and the aggrieved seven governors of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Avwomakpa disclosed this on Tuesday through his media adviser, Ovie Edomi, after a meeting with bishops from the zone.
According to Avwomakpa, “there is nothing wrong with clergymen initiating or brokering peace between two factions but for some bishops to do so in the name of a body that l head and other executives were not consulted gives a wrong signal and suggests a dangerous trend in the body of Christ. It means there are people with political interest or ambition in our fold. lt also means that we have clergymen who join different Christian groups or forums with selfish interest.”
Avwomakpa called on such members to retrace their steps and mend their ways to suit God’s standard and not to please men.
He noted that the situation in Nigeria calls for prayers and intervention of well meaning Nigerians but not to the extent that clerics would allow themselves to be used by politicians
Avwomakpa further noted that as the chairman of CAN in the South South, he remained the leader of Christians in the zone and as such, any peace move by church leaders from the zone must have his blessing.
